Why book?
Mesm Tokyo makes for an idyllic retreat, promising a serene sojourn with the utmost comfort, scenic views, and superb dining. It’s a robust and comprehensive experience for visual, culinary, and performing arts lovers.
Set the scene
The hotel is in the business district of Minato City, one of Tokyo’s most affluent neighborhoods. The property’s interiors feature a neutral color palette with simple yet exquisite details that pay homage to traditional and contemporary Japanese art and design. The space is adorned with grand architectural embellishments, complemented by fun and unexpected moments of color and pop art. Expect to be serenaded by live music each night in the Whisk lounge. The vibe is posh, but not pretentious. Expect more of a quiet luxury crowd—guests walking around in Brunello Cucinelli or The Row, with a mix of both business execs and young professionals retreating here.
The backstory
“Mesm” is short for “mesmerize,” and the property's goal is to captivate and engage each of the five senses through its ambiance and culinary offerings. It's part of the Marriott Autograph Collection and first opened its doors in April 2020. This hotel reflects the artful essence of Tokyo and an “old meets new” aesthetic—blending the traditional with the modern.
The rooms
Guest rooms feel modern with small, thoughtful design details throughout, like the copper hardware and finishes that provide a more sophisticated touch. Each room also features a Casio 88-key digital piano which doubles as a Bluetooth speaker. Opt for a room with a balcony and immerse yourself in the stunning views of the lush Hamarikyu Gardens and Tokyo Skytree (the tallest architectural structure in Japan).
The most grandiose guest room at Mesm is the Chapter 4 Luxe Penthouse Suite, which boasts a balcony that encompasses an entire corner of the property for some of the best panoramic views of Tokyo. This colossal suite also includes a full kitchen, walk-in shower, bathtub, living room, and dining room that can double as a spot to work from home for business professionals.
Food and drink
Expect nothing less than creative storytelling throughout the culinary program here. At mixology bar Whisk, you can choose from an assortment of conceptual drinks inspired by an artist’s atelier, like Venus (based on The Birth of Venus) and Hokusai (based on The Great Wave off Kanagawa). There’s also a limited-time Afternoon Tea showcase, which features bite-size confections inspired by different works of art. Past inspirations include the Greek sculpture Venus de Milo and Monet’s The Water Lily Pond.
Chef’s Theatre, the hotel’s French bistronomy-style restaurant, sources the finest local ingredients for its dishes and “engages all five senses” to create an unparalleled dining experience. Meals here are influenced by famous media, such as The Wizard of Oz or Romeo and Juliet; the immersive experience features a tastefully executed seven-course meal. Each theme is offered for a limited time and rotates seasonally; guests can order a la carte as well. If you’re looking to eat Japanese-inspired dishes instead, try Ginza Miyachiku, the teppanyaki restaurant where chefs cook Miyazaki beef tableside. There’s also a cocktail lounge, Club Mesm, on the 25th floor, which serves up elite Japanese craft cocktails, other specialty beverages, and light bites. Complemented by an outdoor seating area with amazing views, the lounge is a cozy, intimate sanctuary that is exclusive to hotel guests.
The neighborhood/area
Mesm Tokyo is relatively close to Tokyo Tower—a must-visit landmark that functions as a broadcast antenna—and is also in Minato City. It’s also just a 10-minute taxi from the renowned luxury shopping district of Ginza. Shiki Theatre Company is located in the same complex as the hotel, so you can easily grab tickets to a show like Frozen or The Lion King. Weather permitting, be sure to hop on the hour-long cruise across Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River to indulge in even more picturesque views of the Japanese metropolis, which departs from the pier right outside of the hotel.
The service
The service is exemplary with meticulous attention to detail. The staff is friendly and personable, providing a comfortable, personalized experience for each guest. The hospitality managers at Mesm are particularly considerate and attentive to any special instructions or accommodations you may have, like dietary restrictions.
