Set the scene
The entrance sets the tone—over the heads of busy car valets, a neon-lit graffiti mural stretches across the ceiling, a riot of color featuring mandalas, planets, and Arabic coffee pots, with “Mama Shelter” boldly written in Arabic script. Step inside, and the energy only builds—glowing neon signs, mismatched furniture, and playful Looney Tunes references turn every corner into an Instagram moment waiting to happen.
Outdoors, Mama Shelter Dubai's spaces unfold in an extension of the hotel’s playful energy. Stepping out of the elevator, you’re met with an open-air lounge, in which cushioned seating and dining areas sit beneath a canopy of faux wisteria threaded with fairy lights; the ideal spot for an unhurried breakfast, a sunset drink, or simply soaking in the atmosphere. On the third floor's partially covered terrace, there's a series of eclectically tiled swimming pools where you can take in uninterrupted views of the Dubai skyline, making it as much a hangout as it is a place to unwind.
Even with its high-energy aesthetic, Mama Shelter Dubai manages to feel welcoming rather than overwhelming. The atmosphere is youthful and social, but never intrusive. Interaction is encouraged, but not forced. There’s an emphasis on making things effortless for guests—whether it’s arranging meals, spa treatments, or simply ensuring everything is just right.
The backstory
Founded in Paris in 2008 by the Trigano family, who had achieved success with Club Med, Mama Shelter was conceived as a way to mix tourists and locals together in a setting that felt more like home than a hotel. The name itself reflects this ethos—Mama is there to take care of you, to make sure you’re fed, comfortable, and at ease. This sentiment is woven into the experience, from the scrawled “Mama loves you” messages on mirrors, to nostalgic childhood characters peeking out from the decor.
Since its launch, Mama Shelter has opened 17 more hotels, establishing its presence in cities such as Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Los Angeles, London, Prague, and Rome; it joined Accor hotel group in 2014 and became part of Ennismore in 2021. The four-star Dubai outpost, which opened in February 2025, marks its first foray into the Middle East, bringing its distinct blend of stylish stays without the splurge, brave design, and casual hospitality to a city more often associated with high-end opulence.
The rooms
In contrast to the kaleidoscope of colors and textures found throughout the hotel, the room decor is more restrained. With clean, minimal lines, rooms offer a calm retreat from the visual hedonism outside. My bed is firm, its pillows soft, and the linens crisp—all designed for comfort without unnecessary fuss. A fun touch: Looney Tunes masks hang on the bedside lamps. A handwritten welcome message on the mirror, personalised with my name, adds a warm, intimate touch—like Mama’s way of letting you know she’s happy you’re home.
Storage is somewhat limited in the 280-square-foot Medium Mama rooms, making them ideal for shorter stays. Those in need of more space might prefer the 42 square-metre XL Mama rooms, designed for families, or the 452-square-foot XXL Mama Crazy Suite, which doubles as an entertainment space with a private bar, video projector, and a golden disco ball. All rooms are one-bedroom, with the larger categories offering additional seating and living space. For families or groups, select rooms have the option of connecting doors.
Food and drink
Mama Shelter Dubai offers multiple dining options, including: Mama Trattoria for Italian cuisine; Mama Restaurant for modern French-inspired dishes; and Mama Skypool for international bites in an open-air setting. While Mamm’s Bar, a hidden speakeasy, serves cocktails late into the night.
On the ground floor, Mama Trattoria serves classic Italian dishes in a cozy setting. The space is compact and inviting, with seating arranged closely together—classic trattoria-style wooden chairs sit alongside plush, boldly patterned banquettes. A semi-circular alcove in the mirrored bar wall houses a giant pizza oven, its metallic surface catching the light like a disco ball. Mediterranean-style tiles line the bar’s backsplash, adding another layer of visual interest.
Upstairs, Mama’s Restaurant serves as the heart of the hotel’s social scene. The decor is a wild mix of textures and eras—neon signage, stained-glass lamps, foosball tables, and plush booths all coexist in a space designed for conversation. The menu leans towards modern French cuisine, though the dishes are enjoyable rather than memorable. The tuna tartare is fresh and zesty, while the roasted cauliflower, though crisp, lacks flavor. Portion sizes are generous, and staff are happy to adjust servings to suit individual preferences. The standout? The homemade pistachio ice cream—rich, well-balanced, and worth ordering, even for those who don’t usually favor the flavor.
Mama Sky Pool offers a relaxed setting by the pool for drinks and light bites, with the Cine(mama) screen playing old-school cartoons and live sports. Hidden inside Mama’s Restaurant, Mama’s Bar shifts the tone completely—plain dark walls, leather seating, and black-and-white photography create a moody, upscale atmosphere that’s a world away from the decorative frenzy elsewhere.
The spa
Rather than a full-scale spa, Mama Shelter’s wellness offering is a simple extension of the gym— two treatment rooms tucked into the fitness center. There’s no sauna or steam room, just straightforward, no-frills services: either an hour-long shiatsu, Swedish, deep tissue, or aromatherapy massage, or a choice of three facials for radiance, firming, or revitalization; all using French botanical skincare brand L'Odaites. My massage therapist is attentive and adjusts pressure and focus areas to suit my preferences. Initially, upbeat gym music is played in my treatment room, but after I requested more calming spa music, the soundtrack is altered to better match my mood. My Swedish massage uses a lavender and olive oil-based massage oil, and while I'm not given a choice of different scents, the oil itself is neutral, making it ideal for those sensitive to strong fragrances.
The neighborhood
Situated in Business Bay, the hotel is within easy reach of Dubai’s major attractions—The Dubai Mall, the Burj Khalifa, and the Dubai Fountain are about 10 minutes away by car. The location balances convenience with a slightly quieter, more residential feel compared to staying in the heart of downtown Dubai. Like its original Paris location, Mama Shelter hotels are usually situated outside main tourist hubs, beyond city centers, to offer guests a more authentic experience of local life.
The service
Service at Mama Shelter is heartfelt and personalized, striking the right balance between attentiveness and allowing guests their space. Whether adjusting meal portions, accommodating spa preferences, or arranging transport, the focus is on making the stay feel effortless. Staff members—known collectively as the Mama Gang—greet guests warmly, even when engaged in other tasks, reinforcing the home-away-from-home sense of hospitality.
Accessibility
The hotel’s multi-level design, scattered ledges, and staircases add to its dynamic feel, but may present challenges for those with limited mobility. While accessible rooms are available, some public areas may be less convenient for guests who require full accessibility.
For families
The hotel has a children’s pool with inflatables and shallow areas, making it easy for little ones to enjoy the water. A lifeguard is on duty, and families can take advantage of the kids’ menu and babysitting services, though there is no dedicated kids club.
Eco-efforts
Sustainability is woven into the guest experience in a quiet but effective way: organic toiletries are provided; single-use plastics are minimized; taking food leftovers is encouraged to reduce waste.
