Why book?
For access to a state-of-the-art resort with modern flare, magnificent pools, and crystalline waters that nourish the mind and body.
Set the scene
Live Aqua has the most dramatic lobby in Punta Cana. Grand, spacious, bordering on austere, with waterfalls cascading down cold blue tiles and lights trickling down grey cement walls, it’s a stunning contrast to other resorts in Punta Cana. Structured like a fortress of luxury, stringent pillars clash with lush greenery and palatial pools that line the hotel’s many buildings, which are themselves an oddity among Caribbean resorts. You won’t find another hotel like this here. Perfect for couples looking to unwind or a group of friends wanting an idyllic vacation, this is contemporary relaxation; walking through the tropical compound, you can feel your stress melt away as the azure waters come sparkling into view. With a refreshing herbal tea in hand (complimentary upon check-in), Live Aqua whisks you away somewhere special.
The backstory
This is the latest addition from the Posadas Group, a staple on Mexico’s coastline. Live Aqua is the only property outside of Mexico, and it’s easy to see what drew them here. You can spend your days sprawled out on secluded sands, soaking up sun rays, and dining at upscale restaurants—a tasteful amalgamation that has been fruitful enough for them to start building another resort nearby.
The rooms
The guest room entrance looks like a walk-in closet—if your walk-in closet had modern amenities and spacious balconies with its own private hot tubs. The wooden door is startlingly unassuming—a small outline carved into panels that resembles a closet—but once you enter the space, you’re greeted with a bright burst of Caribbean charm. Among the many hotel rooms, guests can choose from garden-view or ocean-view rooms, but my favorite was the Viento suite, set on the beach where the only thing between your bed and the sand was a plunge pool shimmering in the sun. Live Aqua was designed by architects at Skyline Design to be both modern and elegantly restrained. The white walls and wooden frames are ideal for emphasizing the colorful nature outside the door. You'll never be distracted by interior details; rather, your eyes are constantly being redirected to that sliver of ocean waving in the distance, beckoning you to take a dip in its inviting waters.
The neighborhood
Somewhere between verdant countryside with sleeping cattle and a sparkling beach with napping tourists, you’ll find Live Aqua, which seems about as far from society as Punta Cana is from New York. A 20-minute drive from town, the only thing near the resort are other all-inclusive resorts, lined magnificently along the coastline like the palm trees line the sand.
The spa
Bold is the best adjective for Harmony Spa. A harmonious blend of soft, soothing hydrotherapy and brooding architecture composed of cement pillars and contemplative light, this is a risky yet rewarding space for a tropical spa. In contrast to nearby resorts, Harmony Spa feels like a brash experiment, an unabashed contrast to the warm palm huts and sand-hued spas nearby. As you make your way from icy showers to hot baths, a form of hydrotherapy that replenishes your mind and body, you might find your worries naturally drifting away. Treatments include facials, massages, and scrubs, all of which feature locally made products that smell as fresh as fauna from a fragrant Dominican forest.
Food and drink
The chefs at Live Aqua have conquered more countries than Napoleon. Showcasing foods from Africa, France, Italy, and a host of other countries at their buffet, they deliver on every eclectic dish. Pasta is made in-house, seafood is locally sourced, and the wine selection is excellent. The traditional French restaurant serves steak cooked to perfection that pairs perfectly with a glass of red wine and a searing red sunset. Guests have access to beachside restaurants as well, including the laidback Miraflores, nestled under an open-air palm hut, and the Italian-influenced Huzur, perched on the second story of Live Aqua’s main event space. After a languorous day of soaking up rays of sun, grab some shade at Huzur, where seafood is served so fresh you can assume it was caught during your morning swim.
The service
The service was attentive and emotive, bringing a positive energy and inclusivity to Live Aqua resort. The staff are always there for you but never overbearing, always asking how they can assist you with your stay. I really appreciated how thoughtful each staff member was—when they found out I liked cigars, they were always there to offer a light, and when they found out I liked Aperol spritz, they hurried to my lounger to offer another refill. There are countless group activities as well, my favorite being a cigar tasting that showcased local flavors, nuances, and drink pairings, set under a cabana of luminous and fragrant flowers that somehow smell aromatic amidst pillows of cigar smoke.
For families
This is a winning option for multi-generational families. While it caters to honeymooners and couples with more seclusion than the party-packed hotels nearby, it does offer a bed of solitude for families looking to communally unwind.
Accessibility
The hotel is mostly flat, with elevators bypassing every staircase, offering access to the communal spaces.
