Set the scene
The Bellevue Hotel, a stately French Renaissance behemoth, has been a fixture on Philadelphia’s Broad Street since 1904. After an extensive renovation, the hotel, long known as the “Grand Dame of Broad Street,” reopened early in 2025 with 184 guest rooms and the Sporting Club, a 100,000-square-foot wellness facility, which hotel guests have access to during their stay. Checking in, you’re just as likely to see culture buffs with tickets to a Mahler symphony at the Kimmel Center two blocks south as you are to see young families taking advantage of the property’s central location, spacious rooms, and kid-friendly amenities.
The backstory
Originally established in 1904 by hospitality pioneer George C. Boldt, the Bellevue, now part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, went through a major renovation and officially reopened in February 2025.
The rooms
Guest rooms and suites have a chic, understated feel—plush drapery, detailed millwork, honed marble floor tiles—with the historic feel preserved through the restoration. The 1,800-square-foot Presidential Suite is particularly stunning, with a hand-painted Pennsylvania landscape mural, antique European wall paneling, and a private Orangerie garden space that looks like it belongs to a monied aunt with impeccable taste. Some rooms have squares of the building’s original wallpaper framed as artwork.
Food and drink
Pergola restaurant occupies a lofty space on the hotel’s 19th floor, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner (plus a kids menu) with panoramic Center City views.
The spa
While there’s not a dedicated spa on property, guests have access to the Sporting Club, the massive fitness facility adjacent to the hotel, with a steam room, sauna, and cold plunge. Also at the Club: an indoor track; pickleball, basketball, and squash courts; and a 25-meter pool, which has dedicated kids hours.
The neighborhood/area
This busy stretch of Broad Street, just south of City Hall, is also known as the Avenue of the Arts for its string of cultural institutions. The hotel is a perfect home base if you’re in town to see the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Kimmel Center or one of the touring Broadway musicals at the Academy of Music. If you’re keen for a walk, the Bellevue is less than a mile from Rittenhouse Square to the west and Washington Square to the east.
The service
For the sheer size of the hotel, the lobby feels warm and welcoming, and the service feels personalized and attentive.
For families
One immediate sign that the hotel is family-friendly: at check-in, kids are invited to choose a little gift, like a stuffed animal or a classic wooden toy, from a stocked antique trunk in the lobby.
Accessibility
The hotel has eight ADA-accessible rooms in various layouts, including an accessible two queen beds deluxe room, which sleeps four and has an accessible bathtub, and an accessible king suite with a rain shower, an accessible bathtub, and a separate living area.
Anything left to mention?
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the hotel’s renovation thoughtfully preserved plenty of gems, including a restored analog clock in the lobby and an original electric panel designed by Thomas Edison. The hotel is also a popular wedding and event destination, with 30,000 square feet of event space (including the Grand Ballroom that can fit up to 1,000 guests and the Cameo Room, with 36-foot ceilings and balconies overlooking the city).
