Why book?
For the polish and pedigree of a luxury chain and the whimsical modernity of a boutique stay, the ultra design-forward Jay Hotel, conveniently positioned for business and pleasure, brings just enough laid back cool and upscale edge to feel distinctly San Francisco and utterly unique.
Set the scene
No one’s here by accident, and the Jay brings glam to a neighborhood that can sometimes feel more suits than Saturday night. But don’t let the brutalist architecture of the exterior fool you. The wow factor ratchets up instantly upon entry, from the showy spiral staircase winding around a bronze column in the lobby to the geometric textiles, warm wood accents and furnishings, and mid-century lines. Design steals the show at every turn and lures a mix of young tech founders in expensive sneakers and style-savvy tourists who appreciate good looks in a hotel, and like to linger over Wordle in cushy sofas and chairs. Locals prefer to nab midweek dinner reservations at Prelude, the upscale southern-food inspired restaurant in the 360-room hotel.
The backstory
The 25-story building was designed in the late ’80s, in a Brutalist style of raw concrete and sharp angles. Previously the site of Le Méridien hotel, design firm AvroKO ushered in a swanky glow up with warm hues, inviting spaces, and a design-centric aesthetic. The Jay opened in 2023 and is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, delivering a boutique hotel feel with big-brand know-how.
The rooms
Midcentury mood meets West Coast chic. Think light and airy space, tone-on-tone colors, warm wood accents, geometric light fixtures, and custom artwork that practically beg for a braggy selfie. Rooms on higher floors (above 15) flaunt wide open Bay Bridge and Telegraph Hill views, something to appreciate in the urban setting. The smallest rooms are still 413 square feet, and feel thoughtfully appointed with luxury linens, plush robes, modern art, and mini-bars featuring Bay Area products such as local brew from Lagunitas and St. George Gin, and shortbread cookies from Miette. Pro tip: ask for a room facing Clay Street for less traffic noise.
Food and drink
The hotel’s culinary and social heart is Third Floor, the all-day dining and gathering nexus of pre-work breakfast, power lunches, girls' brunches, and evening drinks and dinner. The outdoor Third Floor Terrace is popular for guests and neighbors, especially on fog-free days, and features fire pits, glass wind breaks, and a full bar. Try the Fog Cutter, the Jay’s answer to the Pisco Sour, made with gin, rum, pisco, housemade bitters, and orgeat syrup.
For a pre-meeting caffeine kick, drop by the Coffee Bar in the hotel lobby for lattes and espressos made with beans from Bay Area roaster, Equator.
At Prelude, Executive Chef Celtin Hendrickson-Jones leans into his Alabama roots and his grandmothers’ southern recipes, while putting a modern California spin on each dish. Smoked pork belly and biscuits, we’re looking at you!
The neighborhood
Hemmed conveniently between Chinatown and the financial district, on the edge of the historic Jackson Square neighborhood, the Jay is a prime launch pad for exploring San Francisco, whether you’re in town for business or leisure. Walk five minutes to the waterfront and the Ferry Building for farmers’ market bites, oysters, coffee, or San Francisco treats, and amble over to North Beach for old-school Italian food or pizza from Tony’s Napoletana. Quince, a three-Michelin-star temple to California cuisine, is just a 10-minute Uber away.
The service
Warm, informed, and ready to please with a reservation, recommendations, or a ride—the way a hotel should be. The front desk staff are industrious. If they don’t know the answer off the top of their head, they’re happy to dig it up for you and let you know ASAP.
Families
The Jay is more of a sleek city retreat for couples, solo travelers, and business types who appreciate good design and a great hotel ‘scene.’ Families won’t find a kids’ club, and the overall atmosphere leans stylishly adult. That said, the rooms are spacious, so a rollaway or crib is possible, and the central location makes it easy to get to kid-friendly hotspots such as the exceptionally cool Exploratorium.
Eco effort
The Jay prioritizes sustainability with energy-efficient lighting and water-saving fixtures throughout the building. Guests will find refillable glass water bottles in every room, and refilling stations on every floor. The hotel maintains a strong recycling and composting program to reduce waste, and refillable in-room bath products eliminate the use of small plastic bottles.
Accessibility
The Jay is fully ADA-compliant, with elevators, step-free entrances, and rooms featuring roll-in showers. The lobby layout is open and easy to navigate too.
