How did it strike you on arrival?

Of all the hotels to pop up in Lower Manhattan since the area's revival, this Martin Brudnizki-designed spot is the show stealer, with its nine-level atrium and dressed up cocktail bar. Unlike anything else in New York City, the Beekman is a 19th-century stunner, using eclectic design elements in the massive lobby area (oriental rugs draped from the check-in desk, bookcases filled with objets d'art, distressed green walls, and pink velvet sofas) that make you want to spend a few hours drinking it all in, visually.

    What’s the crowd like?

Lower Manhattan has found its new groove in the past couple years, and it's not just business travelers staying down here anymore. The hotel is a mix of tourists, locals stopping in for a drink or meal, and people in town with business around Wall Street.

The good stuff: Tell us about your room.

With dark wood floors, vintage furnishings swathed in velvet, and distressed leather headboards, the room feels almost more English country house than downtown Manhattan. The black marble desk adds a touch of urban glamour.

We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?

Beds are outfitted in Sferra sheets and make for a great night's sleep.

How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase?

The gorgeous wood armoire is something we'd gladly ship home if we could.

Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.

Bright and cheerful, the tiled marble bathroom is roomy and pretty, stocked with D.S. & Durga products.

Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?

    Super fast, free Wi-Fi.

Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.

The Beekman is home to two renowned and celebrated restaurants by Tom Colicchio and Daniel Boulud. Celebrity chef Tom Colicchio oversees The Bar Room and Temple Court restaurant on the lobby level. Award-winning Chef Daniel Boulud oversees Le Gratin, a Bouchon Lyonnais, also on the lobby level of the hotel.

What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?

The nine-story atrium of the ground level bar is an architectural marvel you'll never forget, with wrought iron balustrades and a skylight that highlights the intricacy of it all.

Bottom line: worth it, and why?

Gorgeous design, two excellent restaurants, and a location in a newly revitalized neighborhood means experiencing the essence of New York City right now.
