    What were your first impressions?
The epitome of a classic city hotel, with well over a century of history in the imposing building. The lobby is impressive, with gilded pillars, gleaming marble floors, and huge crystal chandeliers framing the bustling throng of guests and lobby staff.

    What’s the crowd like?
    Affluent families and business travelers.

    How are the rooms?
My Superior Room was on the 9th floor, overlooking the pool. It oozed regal charm with its dark mahogany furniture and antique fixtures. A plush sofa cordoned off a comfortable living space. The king bed was a delight, with a wealth of pillows and an inordinately comfy mattress. The bathroom wasn’t the largest but it came with a commodious walk-in shower, antique lamps that lit up the wall-sized mirror and it came with a small color television for watching the news while shaving.

    How about the little things?
The large, walk-in closet was a nice touch, and the luxurious bathrobe deserves a special mention. The Art Deco lamps peppered around the room were lovely too.

Food and Drink: The retro murals of the locally-famous Sazerac Bar are a nod to the hotel’s long history, and ordering either a sazerac cocktail or a Ramos gin fizz (both drinks were popularized here) won’t disappoint. The adjoining Fountain Lounge is less evocative but has a solid menu of local dishes, and the attached Domenica dining room is one of the best Italian restaurants in town with a hard-to-beat happy hour. Teddy’s Cafe is a casual coffee and pastry spot if you’re on the go.

    Wi-Fi. What’s the word?
The Wi-Fi was fast and reliable, but you'll have to pay for it ($14.95 for guests; free for Hilton Honors members).

    Bottom line.
It's at the more expensive end of New Orleans accommodations, but the levels of luxury and attention to detail are well worth it. The hotel’s long history and traditions are celebrated throughout from the bar, renovated to its original glory, to the must-see lobby.
