Why book?
This is the hotel to book if you want to be in the dead-center of Newport’s action–it’s on the waterfront, just steps from shopping on the wharves, and a few more steps from all the bars and restaurants on Thames Street.
Set the scene
This hotel hums with energy, with a healthy crew of yachties, young couples, and city slickers checking in for weekends away. It’s a far cry from Newport’s gilded past. If this hotel were a cocktail, it wouldn’t be a forgettable glass of Sauvignon Blanc—it would be a potent, perfectly blended Negroni. It’s Newport, but cool and modern.
The backstory
Owned by The Peregrine Group and opened in 2020, the hotel is a love letter to contemporary Newport. It has modern architecture that’s highly functional and enhances the harbor’s natural beauty, but a sense of place that honors Newport’s maritime history.
The rooms
Yacht club chic. That's the description. The building’s industrial framework is softened by crisp Italian linens, rainfall showers, and oversized windows framing water views. If you’re traveling with family or in a group, book the Maritime Suite, which is essentially an apartment unto itself, complete with its own living room and the option to book an adjoining room for a two-bedroom setup.
Food and drink
The hotel’s partner restaurant, Giusto, is helmed by Rhode Island native Chef Kevin O’Donnell (previously of Boston’s popular SRV). The menu is a fantasia of coastal Italian fare, with freshly made pasta, creative seafood, and a squid salad that would make any nonna proud. Having a hard time making your choice? The Freestyle Tasting Menu ($55/person) lets the chef lead the way. I’ve dined at Giusto probably six times over the last three years, and have never been disappointed. Fittingly, “Giusto” is Italian for “quite right.”
The neighborhood/area
This is the heart of Newport. You’ve got the waterfront on one side, Thames Street on the other, and a never-ending rotation of shops, bars, and restaurants in every direction. It gets a little busy during the peak summer periods, but the rooms overlooking the water feel especially tranquil, especially after dark.
The service
The service is low-key and friendly, and your host might just have a Rhode Island accent. They’ll be happy to point you towards their preferred bar for a nightcap or help you arrange a sunset charter.
For families
There are a few rooms that can be booked as adjoining blocks, ensuring that everyone in the family has room to stretch out.
Accessibility
The hotel is ADA-compliant. Elevators access every floor and ADA-friendly rooms can be booked.
Anything left to mention?
Don’t miss the large maritime bell at the hotel’s corner, a nod to its maritime past. It’s used during parades and special occasions.
