Why book?
For travelers who want adventure without pitching a tent—but who find the area’s ultra-luxe Airbnbs a little too removed from the outdoors—AutoCamp Joshua Tree strikes a rare balance. Just 10 minutes from the park’s west entrance, guests can stay in custom-designed Airstreams scattered across 25 acres of desert, with sweeping mountain views that turn gold at sunset and pale purple at sunrise. After dark, some of the clearest night skies in the region are visible. Shielded from the elements and stocked with comforting amenities, this hotel manages to feel like part of the national park.
Set the scene
Since AutoCamp Joshua Tree is right outside of the park’s entrance, it’s especially great for those who want to spend all day in nature. The convenient location means a better chance of beating the crowds at the trails or in town. AutoCamp is also a short walk to the main drag, sparing guests the headache of the limited parking around shops and restaurants. The hotel draws a diverse crowd, but skews toward fashion-forward city dwellers or adventure-focused friend groups—think full-length leather jackets and cowboy boots alongside Patagonia layers and Salomons. While you’ll see the occasional guest snapping pictures in front of the Airstreams, most are here to explore; the property is nearly empty once breakfast is finished. The prime location and low light pollution make AutoCamp a solid stargazing location, so most guests return after dark. The lodge is usually buzzing with guests playing card games, enjoying daily happy hour, or sitting by the roaring fireplace.
The backstory
AutoCamp Joshua Tree opened in January 2022 as the brand’s fourth location and its first foray into the desert. AutoCamp has already established itself across other adventure destinations—national parks, coastal towns, mountain regions—known not only for its sleek, modern Airstreams but also for its design-driven lodges and well-considered amenities. The brand aims to blend the traditional outdoor experience with the service, comfort, and design of a boutique hotel. And in the High Desert, it largely succeeds.
The rooms
The property features 55 rooms designed to deliver a genuinely comfortable take on camping. From the outside, the Airstreams ooze nostalgia. Step inside, and the contrast is immediate. The interiors are bright and unmistakably luxe, with a minimalist aesthetic that makes the compact suites feel larger than they are. In each, there’s a bed tucked into the head of the trailer, surrounded by panoramic windows that frame the mountains. A compact but impressively functional kitchenette includes a microwave, fridge, stove, and ample storage, along with a thoughtfully designed pull-out sofa. At the rear, the bathroom defies expectations of a typical camper setup—finished with marble tile, a walk-in shower, toilet, and sink, it feels closer to a newly renovated apartment than a trailer. Still, the Airstream’s design demands a bit of discipline: leave bags and gear on the floor, and the space will quickly feel cluttered. Guests would be wise to make full use of the built-in storage—and repack between outings—to maintain a spacious feel. Each unit comes equipped with a flat-screen TV (screencast only), a Bluetooth audio system, and heating and air conditioning. Temperature control requires some attention, as the trailers can heat up quickly in direct sunlight and cool dramatically after dark.
Accommodation options span several Airstream categories. Premium units offer the best mountain views, while the Explorer Suite includes a complimentary AllTrails subscription and a foam roller. For the ultimate glamping experience, the Vista Airstream Suite boasts a luxurious outdoor shower. Tiny home–style cabins are also available for travelers who prefer a more traditional structure.
Food and drink
AutoCamp Joshua Tree is one of the few hotels in the area with an on-site restaurant, The Kitchen, which serves a short menu of reliable staples—pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, and breakfast items. The food isn’t the reason to book a stay, but after a long day on the trails, it’s convenient and satisfying.
Meals can be enjoyed inside the Cubhouse, back in your Airstream, or on the outdoor patio, where some nights bring live music. Guests can also order grill kits, which include either steak or chicken along with green beans, mac and cheese, and baked beans, all to be cooked on your private grill. (It’s worth noting that my steak arrived frozen, so order ahead and plan accordingly.) The hotel offers complimentary coffee and granola in the mornings—an easy grab-and-go before heading into the park.
The s’mores are a standout, featuring vanilla bean marshmallows and rich chocolate, neatly packaged in a kit that makes for an easy dessert while stargazing. You’re welcome to bring your own firewood, though wood and fire starters are also available for purchase at the on-site general store. That store is nearly a food destination in its own right, stocked with elevated road-trip snacks—artisanal chocolate, baked potato chips, gourmet trail mix—alongside a well-chosen selection of local beer and wine. Basic groceries like milk, cheese, eggs, and pancake mix are also available, though guests are equally free to bring their own supplies to cook in their rooms.
The neighborhood/area
If you’re visiting Joshua Tree National Park, AutoCamp’s location is hard to beat. It’s just a 10-minute drive to the park’s west entrance, giving guests easy access to the trails while keeping the hotel immersed in the same desert landscape. Joshua trees dot the property, and sweeping mountain views stretch across the horizon. Once night falls, the wide-open desert skies offer some of the best stargazing outside of the park.
Downtown Joshua Tree is a short walk away, offering a taste of the town’s eclectic charm: browse the weekend farmers market, shop at JT Trading Post, grab coffee at Joshua Tree Coffee Company, enjoy brunch at Crossroads Café or JT Country Kitchen, and take in the local art and boutique shops. For those on a short visit, AutoCamp’s central location is a major draw—you can hit the park in the morning and be in town for lunch or shopping by afternoon, maximizing every moment in this unique desert setting.
The service
When it comes to service, AutoCamp Joshua Tree feels like your local campsite. Staff greets you like an old friend, setting a familiar, relaxed tone from the moment you arrive. Ultra-friendly and laid-back, they handle check-in, give you the lay of the land, and then step back to let you explore—though they’re always nearby and reachable 24/7 by text. Someone mans the desk through the night, and staff make rounds on a golf cart (a detail I appreciated as a solo traveler).
They can also transport you and your bags to your Airstream, help start a fire, coordinate seasonal bike rentals, or offer local recommendations. Whether you want space to yourself or a friendly chat in the Clubhouse, the service matches the vibe of the campground perfectly, making the property feel less like a hotel and more like a true home base in the desert.
For families
AutoCamp makes for a fun family adventure, even if the Airstreams feel a bit snug at capacity. They sleep up to four, but are most comfortable for three adults or two adults and two young children. A pack ‘n’ play fits in the living area if the couch isn’t pulled out, though guests need to bring their own.
On-site, there’s no shortage of activities for kids: an outdoor play structure, yard games, firepits, and a heated pool, along with board and card games in the Clubhouse. Young explorers can join the daily “Find the Desert Tortoise” game, a hide-and-seek challenge featuring a stuffed tortoise tucked away somewhere in the Clubhouse. Families can also participate in daily arts and crafts sessions, with materials provided on request and staff on hand to help kids create their own souvenirs. Dogs are welcome for a nonrefundable fee of $75, with a maximum of two dogs per room and a weight limit of 80 pounds per dog.
Eco effort
AutoCamp’s design is eco-conscious by nature: minimal construction means less waste, lower energy use, and limited land disturbance. Native, drought-resistant plants reduce irrigation needs, while solar panels help the property rely less on traditional energy sources. Low-flow plumbing fixtures and water-saving showerheads cut water consumption, and LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances lower overall energy use. The property also uses non-toxic, sustainable cleaning products, offers recycling programs and composting, maintains a refill station to reduce single-use plastics, and sells eco-friendly products in the retail area.
Accessibility
The property offers accessible suites with roll-in showers and ADA-compliant ramps. The pool and Clubhouse are also fully accessible. Airstream suites come with remote-controlled blinds for added convenience.
Anything left to mention?
The Airstream walls are on the thinner side, and because the property encourages outdoor lounging, evenings can be lively—something light sleepers may want to note. Nights can also turn chilly while grilling dinner, so dressing in layers is essential. Be sure to plan at least one evening on-property to catch the sunset, when the mountains are painted in shades of pink and purple before giving way to a sky filled with twinkling stars. Security is solid, with a gated entrance, coded access, and Airstreams that lock automatically with key cards. Whatever you do, don’t skip the s’mores kits—they’re genuinely excellent.
