Why book?
Skip the overcrowded old town and opt for a trusted brand in a quiet location–just a 15-minute metro ride from central Barcelona and within spitting distance of FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium.
Set the scene
Barcelona may be one of the world’s most desirable travel destinations but overtourism has taken some of the shine off the Catalan capital in recent years. A stay at the uptown Grand Hyatt offers the best of both worlds: a quiet, safe location, with plenty of leafy green space nearby that allows you to dip in and out of the hustle and bustle of downtown. The plentiful rooms and setting next to the Catalan Congress Center and university attract groups and business execs, while the large indoor and outdoor swimming pools and excellent spa are a major draw for families and leisure travelers—especially in the hot summer months.
The backstory
Formerly the Hotel Sofia (part of Hyatt’s Unbound collection of independent hotels), the property rebranded as the Grand Hyatt Barcelona following a full refurb in early 2024. It delivers everything you’d expect of Hyatt’s legacy luxury brand—with some unexpectedly trendy features on top—including an excellent new Peruvian rooftop restaurant and a swoon-worthy spa.
The rooms
Rooms at the Grand Hyatt Barcelona come in two styles. Lower floors are distinctly businesslike with their muted, gray and white color palette and restricted views. The higher you get, the better the experience, with the 12th floor and up offering eye-popping panoramas of Barcelona stretching all the way down to the Mediterranean.
Up here, the Art Deco-inspired rooms and 49 suites are more colorful too, with splashes of teal and turquoise to add a playful touch to the corporate vibe. Set on the 15th floor and up, the spacious 430-square-foot Junior Suites are worth the splurge, with their massive bathrooms featuring free-standing tubs and walk-in showers big enough for two or more.
Despite the recent renovation, the in-room perks are somewhat lacking: there’s no Chromecast on the 49-inch built-in Smart TV (so don’t plan on catching up on your favorite shows), and the minibar is a rather sad empty refrigerator that can be filled on request. Turndown service may or may not happen, depending on the day.
Food and drink
The 19th-floor Maymanta restaurant is what really makes the Grand Hyatt Barcelona pop. Feast on Peruvian delicacies like zippy red tuna ceviche, and a tortita (or corn cracker) topped with shrimp tartare and a cream of yuzu and algae, that’s so good you may end up ordering it twice. The bar also whips up a killer pisco sour, best enjoyed on the outdoor terrace, overlooking the Barcelona panorama. The hotel also has a tapas bar, a coffee shop and (still to come) the new Leña steakhouse by celebrity Michelin-starred chef Dani Garcia.
The spa
Safe to say, this hotel’s standout features can be found at either end of the building – meaning the top-floor restaurant and the basement spa. The latter is a real statement piece with an 800-square foot pool and waterfall, water jets, a Turkish steam area, a sauna, and six private cabins for exclusive Natura Bissé treatments (including a double suite with a private sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi). There is a spacious, well-equipped, but sadly windowless, gym and a sizable outdoor pool with a terrace, sunbeds, a bar, and a restaurant.
The neighborhood/area
You might be surprised to learn that this is the area most Barcelona locals would prefer to live in. Whereas overseas visitors and expats typically base themselves in the historic—and chaotic—downtown area, Barcelonians favor the peace and safety of uptown. While you’ll find fewer tourist sites around here, there is plenty to do, with shopping at El Corte Inglés and L’Illa, excellent restaurants (like Casa Petra tapas bar and Bella’s, a local favorite for Italian fare), leafy parks (Pedralbes Park and the Torre Girona gardens), the Catalan Congress Center, and FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium (currently under renovation and slated to reopen in late 2025) all mere minutes away. As for the hustle and bustle of central Barcelona, just hop on the metro and you’ll be in the thick of things in less than 15 minutes.
The service
Service is helpful and cheerful, if a little chaotic at peak check-in and check-out times. Looking for a local tip restaurant recommendation? Ask head concierge Luis just about anything, and he’ll be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
For families
This spacious hotel is a hit with families, not least thanks to its sprawling outdoor spaces and swimming pools. Adjoining rooms are available, as is the special ‘King with Extra Bed’ category, ideal for families or friends.
Eco effort
Grand Hyatt Barcelona has been awarded the LEED Gold certification for its sustainability work, which includes initiatives to promote alternative energy sources, extensive recycling and reuse of materials. To balance energy usage, an optimal temperature is maintained throughout the hotel (66-70 F in winter, and 77-81 F in summer).
Accessibility
Accessible areas include: guest rooms, public restrooms, restaurants, fitness center, spa, public entrance, front desk, and concierge desk. Accessible rooms have mobility features and doorways with 32 inches of clear width. Service animals welcome.
